Highway Tunnel Girder Replacement

Steel detailing and fabrication documentation · Southern California

THE PROJECT

From intent to something buildable.

Three existing tunnels had steel ribs that needed replacing: some fully, many only in sections. Every new piece had to fit geometry that was already there. The curved girders followed a 13-foot radius, the partial replacements varied in length and position, and the old liner plates had to connect to new steel with no room for trial and error on site.

Engineer Artists developed the fabrication documentation for 20 individual curved girder pieces across the three tunnels. Each piece was marked to its exact location. The drawings defined bevels for field welds, splice plates, the transition from existing to new steel, and liner plate connections drilled on site. Field-positioning notes marked where the fabricator and installer would need to adjust to existing conditions.

The fabricator received documentation that treated the existing structure as a constraint, not an assumption. Fit problems were resolved on paper before fabrication and installation began.
